LOCAL media on Thursday reported that residents in some southern localities in Vietnam have been advised to protect themselves as the Ultraviolet (UV) Index hit “extremely high” levels.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the local newspaper Vietnam News reported that Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho city, Ca Mau province, and Nha Trang city in the south-central Khanh Hoa province saw UV Index levels rise to 10.

The newspaper explained that level 10 meant a very high risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure where the human skin could burn after just 25 minutes.

It further explained that level 11 and above meant a threatening volume of UV, which could  damage human skin and burn eyes if outside for just 15 minutes without any protection.

High UV levels in southern Vietnam could be attributed to the weather condition. They appeared mostly during clear skies, in the middle of the dry season and in conjunction between dry and rainy seasons in southern Vietnam.

Doctors had recommended that people should consider staying indoors to avoid direct exposure to sunlight when the UV Index is above seven saying if it reached 10, the radiation could be extremely harmful. (Xinhua/NAN)
