AN art enthusiast, Hana Omilani, has said that art could be explored to unite the peoples of Africa just as sport had been used to unite the global community.
Addressing journalists on Thursday on her upcoming maiden Impart Artists Fair in Lagos, the art consultant said that African unity could be achieved through exploration of art programmes across the continent.
Omilani said that art as an aspect of the creative sector was capable of uniting Africans when government organises programmes along the creative sector to involve the 54 African countries.
According to her, sports have been used as a unifying force for the African continent over the years and art could also be explored to achieve same result.
“Art is one of the tools to use in uniting Africans, just as we have used sports to effect global unity.
“It is time to show the world our potential in arts instead of dwelling on our negative stories which is only tarnishing our image.
“This can be done when we organise art fairs and some other programmes around arts that would gather African professionals in the art industry to interract and share ideas,” she said.
Omilani said that her interest in uniting Africans through the creative sector influenced her decision to hold the art fair, aimed at promoting African artists and their works.
She said that the fair, slated for Oct. 25 to Oct. 27 at Eko Atlantic, Victoria Island, Lagos, was also organised to increase awareness of African arts and culture sector as well as improve African art recognition on a global pedestal.
According to her, the fair would be projecting 1000 recent works of African upcoming and renowned artists, creating room for them to interact and exchange ideas.
She noted that the works would be exhibited physically for all to see on various social media platforms and other digital outfits.
Omilani said that the artists across different African countries would also have opportunity to interract and influence one another.
“The fair would be offering artists a platform to exhibit themselves through the use of interactive and immersive technology.
“The artists that will be showcasing their works are from Nigeria, Cameroon, Sudan, Kenya, Congo, Tanzania, South Africa, Cote d’ ivoire and more.
“The works had been vetted by a selection committee made up of 11 international art professionals and collectors.
“The 3-day event has its theme as “Art Meets Tech”; this is where technology plays a vital role and we believe that through technology we can reach a larger audience needed to create volume in the transaction of African art,” she said.
The art consultant said that the fair would also feature digital art showcase using ground breaking virtual reality and augmented reality technologies and workshops with artists and professionals.
She urged Africans to grace the art exhibition and enjoy the best that African artists have to offer.
