EGYPTIAN Swimmers from the America University, Cairo, Egypt (AUC), top the medal table in the swimming event at the ongoing All African University Games (FASU) jointly hosted by the University of Lagos and Lagos State University.
The final medal table released on Saturday, AUC won 39 gold to came first in the swimming event of the games.
AUC’s Ali Mohammed won the gold medal in the 400m men’s individual medley final.
He finished in 4.49.13s to win the top medal.
Ahmed Tarek, also of the same university, finished in 4.50.53 to win the silver, while Mugisha Jacob, of the Makerere University, Uganda,won bronze medal, finishing in 5.58.28.
Also, Zeina Haytham of the AUC won the gold medal in the 400m women’s individual medley by finishing in 6.14.96s to win the coveted medal.
Zarah Ahmed, also from same university, won the silver in 6.29.65s.
Similarly, Rawan Fall, of AUC won a gold medal in the 50m women’s freestyle finished in 28.82s
Nour Hussein of the same university won a silver medal in the 50m women’s freestyle finished in 28.84, while Peremoboere Kimiakigha of Benson Idahosa University Nigeria, won the bronze medal with a time of 29.29s.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the swimming event, Shehab Younis, the AUC’s coach, who was a former swimmer, expressed happiness with his swimmers performance.
” Our victory is as a result of hard work and commitment to the game, the swimmers put their body and soul into the competition,” he said.
Younis attributed the success of his swimmers to the University Director of sports.
“Our director of sports should be commended for the success of our team.
“He really tried for the team, his commitment to sports in the university and our country shows how he loves sports development, I thank him.
“His students were able to conquer other universities’swimmer in the competitions because they trained hard for it,” the coach said .
Also speaking, Oyindawonuola Onwuchekwa, of University of Lagos, (UNILAG), a five bronze medalist, said that she would give credit to the school.authority for providing the enabling environment for the students.
She,however, called on the school to make the pool available for the students’ use after the games.
“The pool have been upgraded to international standard for the games, our appeal to the school authority is that, they make the pool available for us to practice after the games.
“The more we practice with it the better for us to get use to international standard pool for future competitions.
” I thank God I was able to get something, half of a bread is better than none, it was not an easy thing anyway.
“Is not easy competing with swimmers that had been exposed to top facilities and experience.”she said.
NAN reports that AUC led the medal table with 39 gold, 25 silver, 7 bronze medals, United State International University in Africa, Kenya, came second with 2 gold, 25 silver, 11 bronze medals.
Benson Idahosa University of Benin City, placed third with one gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze in the FASU swimming event. (NAN)
