ORGANIZERS of the ongoing second FCT Loofball Inter Schools Competition, say the event is aimed at creating more awareness of the sport.
Winner Matahula, Executive Director of Loofball Sports Development Initiative (LSDI), said the initiative is aimed at promoting the game especially at the grassroots.
Matahula told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that the competition organised by LSDI, with four schools participating, has only male teams due to lack of funds.
“We are striving to create more sporting opportunities for the Nigerian youth through the development and promotion of loofball.
“We believe that the grassroot is the best platform to begin in terms of promoting the game.
“We have reached about seven states in the country and have made remarkable success via the school system.
“We have only male teams participating now but by 2024, we hope to reach out to more schools and female teams as well.
“Funds has been one of our greatest challenges and it has limited us from reaching female teams, but we hope that subsequent years will be better,” he said.
Government Secondary School (GSS) Garki , GSS Karu, Government Junior Secondary School (GJSS) Wuse Zone 3 and Model Secondary School (MSS) Maitama are the schools participating.
GSS Karu defeated GSS Garki in the first game of the tournament on Tuesday, while the second will be played on Wednesday between MSS Maitama and GJSS Wuse Zone 3.
GSS Karu will wait for the winner of the Wednesday’s fixture in the finals on Thursday.
NAN reports that loofball, with similarities as volleyball, is a team sport played by two teams of five players on a unique rectangular court, separated by a net. (NAN
