THE FCT Minister of State, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, has urged the newly inaugurated House Committee on FCT Area Councils and Ancillary Matters to promote local governance in the federal capital.

Mahmoud made the call during the inauguration of the committee at the National Assembly complex in Abuja.

She explained that the committee would play a critical role in ensuring effective local governance and implementation of policies and development programmes in FCT communities.

“The committee will typically perform functions relating to the administration, development, and coordination of activities in the FCT area councils.

“Some of the functions include overseeing local governance, infrastructure development and addressing ancillary issues that impact on the overall well-being of FCT residents,” she said.

The minister pledged the FCT Administration’s commitment to support members of the committee to discharge their constitutional oversight functions.

Earlier, the Chairman of the committee, Mr Agbedi Fred (PDP-Bayelsa) stressed the need for a working synergy with the FCTA.

The lawmaker particularly identified some of the areas of interest as tourism, revenue drive, development of rural infrastructure, sports, chieftaincy affairs and other matters.

“The committee will continue to legislate on policies that will help to accelerate development across the six Area Councils of the FCT,” he said. (NAN)
