FCTA takes campaign against gender-based violence to 6 area councils
Africa
THE Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has taken its campaign against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) to the six area councils of the territory.
The Minister of State, FCT, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, disclosed this during a sensitisation workshop for GBV Desk Officers in Bwari and the Abuja Municipal Area Councils, on Friday.
Mahmoud, who was represented by her Special Assistant and Focal Person on Social Investment, Hajiya Maijidda Kuku, said that addressing GBV was crucial to building a just and equitable society.
She noted that GBV has continued to affect millions of individuals, particularly women and marginalised communities.
According to her, intense campaigns against GBV in the FCT will curb the ugly trend.
“The psychological, physical, and emotional impact of GBV is devastating, with long-term health consequences.
“As such, aggressive campaigns will significantly raise awareness about the various forms of GBV, including domestic violence, sexual assault, and harassment.
“Also, education and outreach efforts are essential to challenge societal norms and stereotypes that condone violence.
“Mobilising communities, as we are doing today, to participate in prevention efforts can create safe environments and promote collective responsibility.”
The minister called on the Desk Officer to increase awareness in the fight against GBV in all the 62 political wards in FCT to change harmful behaviours in communities.
Also speaking, Ms Celina Agana, Gender Officer, FCT Social Safety Nets Coordinating Unit, advised that the campaign should be culturally sensitive and tailored to different communities.
According to her, understanding of local context and engaging community leaders will enhance the effectiveness of the campaign.
Agana also emphasised the use of local languages and pidgin English. (NAN)
