PROF. Olajide Babayemi of the Department of Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ibadan, says introduction of feedlot system by the Lagos State Government will check the influx of unhygienic animals in the state.

Babayemi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos that the system would also promote “eat what you rear and rear what you eat” by government.

He said that many animals transported into the country are not good for consumption but find there way in because of lack of choice.

Babayemi lauded the Lagos State Government for the initiative noting that animals reared in the feedlot would be traceable from birth to table.

He noted that feedlot system was been practiced all over the world where land was scares or limited.

According to him, feedlot means rearing of animals in a particular location where they are not allowed to move around or roam about as they done conventionally.

“Animals will be restricted and fed where they are.

“This is a good practice and that is the practice all over the world where land is scares.

“Where you have plenty of land, where land is not limited, the animals are not supposed to be confined 24 hours.

“Animals are supposed to be restricted in a particular paddock where there is grass, forage grass and legume.

“They are fed and then at a particular time, they are brought in to be given supplements so that they would do better.

“Here in Lagos and some other places where land is scares, feedlot or total restriction is the best practice.

“This is what Lagos state is trying to practice where you bring grass to where the animals are.

Babayemi noted that Lagos state government has recognised the fact that the animals that come to the state are not enough and needed to rear more.

“Out of the number that comes to Lagos, some of them are nothing to write home about.

“They are not the animals that ordinary person should be eating in Nigeria but because we don’t have choice, they bring them to Lagos.

“The focus of Lagos is to stop some of this animals that are being brought, it is not all of them that are bad, some of them are good,” he said. (NAN)
