FG inaugurates erosion-control, flood projects in Anambra State

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated Federal Government’s commitment to erosion control in Anambra state, saying that it is among 19 ecological intervention projects of government for the first quarter of 2018.
The inauguration and handover of the project to the community by President Buhari, was represented by Minister of State, Environment, Sharon Ikeazor.
According to the president, the project is expected to check flooding and gully erosion menace in the community and environs as well as become a huge relief to the community, thereby enhancing the living standards of the people of Umunze. Buhari also said that the project would help to reduce dangers to life and property associated with erosion and persistent flooding being experienced in the community.
He commended the people of Umunze for their cooperation and provision of rancour-free environment during the project execution.
The president implored them to cherish the project by preventing indiscriminate dumping of refuse into the drainage channels.
“It is the responsibility of this community to own and maintain the project to ensure its sustainability,’’ he added.
The project was executed by the Federal Government through the Ecological Fund Office, EFO.
The Permanent Secretary, EFO, Habiba Lawal, represented by Felix Okeke, tasked the community to ensure that the resources committed to the completion of the project would not be a waste.
In a speech, Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra state said that the state government had intensified measures towards erosion control in the state and called on the Federal Government and the World Bank to continue to support efforts of the state.
“We, in the government of Anambra State are very happy and will like to thank the President for this particular effort.
“Erosion is a major problem, one of the greatest challenges we have in the state, as the state is losing its landmass to gully erosion.’’
Nkem Okeke, the Deputy Governor, of Anambra state, represented the governor at the occasion.
