FG, Oyo State to spend N226m on youth support programme

THE Oyo State FADAMA Project Coordinator, Mr Nath Olayinka, on Friday said N226, 854, 186.88 has been spent on Graduate Unemployed Youth Support (GUYS) programme of various agricultural enterprises in the state.
Olayinka, who disclosed this at a sensitisation programme held for the beneficiaries in Ibadan, noted that about 252 youths in the state has benefitted from the FADAMA Graduate GUYS programmes.
He said that the project was being funded by the World Bank, Federal Government and Oyo State Government through counterpart funding.
He said that the beneficiaries were graduates, who specialised in fish farming, yam, maize and cassava farming, among others.
According to him, there are 94 participants for cassava and maize who received N814,815 each.
“We have 37 in fishery, who received N1,021,262.50 each, two for maize (N804,599.5), one beneficiary for Tomato, Pepper and vegetable received N996, 329 and two for yam (N727,378).
“Large and small ruminants farmers about five received N873,950 and N923,300 respectively, 22 in Piggery (N1,044,862.5), 1 in Snairy (N664,740), three in Extension Services (N874,740), among others,’’ Olayinka said.
He said that the money was paid directly into the beneficiaries bank accounts.
“Ours is to monitor that they use it for what it’s meant for to ensure successful implementation of the programme.
“Out of the 23 states that are participating in the project, Oyo, Taraba and Plateau have large allocation for FADAMA GUYS.
“Others received 1/3 of what we received, FADAMA GUYS scheme was initiated in 2017 and implemented 2019,” he said.
Olayinka urged the beneficiaries to take a good advantage of the gesture, particularly in a society with large number of unemployed people.
He equally advised them to take advantage of the insurance policy packaged with the programme to minimise any form of loss on their farm.
A beneficiary, Oluwaseyi Kiyesola, who specialised in fish farming, expressed gratitude to FADAMA, World Bank and the state government for the kind gesture.
Another beneficiary, Jenifa Adedotun implored unemployed youths to take advantage of this kind of programme, to engage in agriculture rather than roaming the streets in search of white collar jobs. (NAN)
