FIFA Bans Brazil’s Media Officer
BREAKING NEWS, Sports Briefs
–
THE Fédération Internationale de Football Association, FIFA’s, disciplinary committee has imposed a four-match ban on Rodrigo Paiva, a media officer for Brazil. The committee took the decision following an incident recorded during the half-time of the 2014 FIFA World Cup match between Brazil and Chile on June 28.
The hosts Brazil won the match 3-2 on penalties after they had played 1-1 at full and extra time.
The committee said it came to the conclusion that Paiva breached Article 48 paragraph 1 d of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, FDC.
It suspended Paiva from four matches, three of which were mandatory for him to serve with the fourth subject to certain conditions.
Although Paiva had served the automatic one-match suspension on July 4, other suspensions would be applied in Brazil’s remaining two matches. He served the second suspension in the semi-final match between Brazil and Germany on July 8.
The third suspension would be served in the third-place match to be played on Saturday, July 12, by the host.
The committee also said the fourth match suspension would only be applied if Rodrigo commits another infringement during the two-year probationary period.
“If the fourth match suspension were to be applied, it will be in addition to any sanction pronounced with the new infringement committed during the probationary period. The Disciplinary Committee also imposed a fine of CHF10,000, in accordance with Article 48 paragraph 2 of the FDC,’’ it said.
FIFA said the decision had been served on the official as well as the Brazil Football Association.
Manchester United Unveils New Kit
MANCHESTER United has unveiled its new kit for the 2014/15 season. The collarless shirt, designed by Nike, features white on the sleeves and a hint of black. The new design would mark the first strip released during Louis van Gaal’s tenure at the Old Trafford club.
The traditional white collar returns for the new campaign, while the words ‘youth, courage and greatness’ are embossed in the neck of the shirt.
The team is expected to wear the shirt for the first time later this month when it takes on LA Galaxy as part of the pre-season tour of the United States.
The home strip is the first to bear the Chevrolet logo and Old Trafford fans will be hoping that it brings the club better results than they experienced last term.
United finished seventh, 24 points adrift of Manchester City, Premier League champion, after a nightmare campaign which saw David Moyes, who replaced the legendary Alex Ferguson, sacked less than 12 months into his six-year deal.
United’s rivals Liverpool also launched one of its strips for the new season on Monday, July 7. Steven Gerrard, captain of the team, Raheem Sterling, a winger, and Daniel Sturridge, a striker, led the Liverpool cast as the Anfield club released its third kit.
Alberto Di Stefano, Real Madrid legend, Dies at 88
ALFREDO Di Stefano, one of Real Madrid legends, died on Saturday, July 5, at the age of 88. Di Stefano reportedly suffered a heart attack and had been in an induced coma in Madrid’s Gregorio Maranon hospital before he passed on the fateful Saturday.
As a forward, he won five straight European cups, scoring in each final between 1956 and 1960. The Argentina-born player also won eight Spanish league titles and was voted European player of the year in 1957 and 1959.
He left Real Madrid in 1964 at the age of 38, having scored more than 300 goals across 11 seasons.
Di Stefano played at international level for three nations but never appeared at the World Cup.
He won six caps for Argentina and played four times for Colombia during a spell in that country’s league. However, his Colombia caps are not officially recognised by Fifa.
Fifa had said in 1954 he could not play for Spain but reversed that decision in 1957 after he gained citizenship and he went on to win 31 caps, scoring 23 goals.
