A Lagos lawmaker, Prince Bisi Yusuff, on Monday urged Northern governors to find sustainable solutions to the insurgency in the region.
Yusuff, representing Alimosho Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
He was speaking against the backdrop of the recurring episodes of suicide bombing and kidnap of school children in the region, especially the Northeast zone.
The lawmaker, who is also the Chairman, House Committee on Public Accounts (Local), advised the Northern governors to massively invest in education of its people as part of efforts to tackle insurgency.
“It has become imperative to tackle security challenges facing the North.
“About 15 persons were also killed Monday (April 1) in Borno State again while several others were wounded in the latest attack by the insurgents.
” I think we have had enough of killings that the chief security officers of the affected state need to intensify effort to stop these mindless killers.
“Illiteracy is a disease that can consume the people. The Northern governors should know what to do to rescue the region.
“We must also find a lasting solution to illiteracy in this country. The easiest people to govern are the educated elites,” he said.
He added that the high rate of illiteracy in the region posed a serious security challenge to the area, saying that concerted efforts must be made to address it.
On the recent realise of the kidnapped Dapchi school girls and refusal of some of the victims to go back to school, the lawmaker described the situation as unfortunate.
He urged governors of the affected states to ensure safety of school children in studying environment so as not to increase level of illiteracy.
“The report that some students in the north are now afraid of going to schools is unfortunate, efforts must be made to return these students to school,” he said.
NAN reports that no fewer than 15 persons were feared dead and 55 others injured in a Sunday night attack by Boko Haram insurgents at Bale community in the outskirts of Maiduguri. (NAN)
