FOLLOWING the volume of support and successes it has so far recorded, the conveners of the campaign, with hashtag #OkerenkokoNotOkerenghigho#, has concluded arrangements to storm the National Assembly complex, Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory with more than five million Ijaws in a fortnight to present their case to the hallowed chambers of the National Assembly.
#OkerenkokoNotOkerenghigho is a platform recently developed by Jacob Abai, the publisher of GbaramatuVoice Newspaper and also the chief executive of GbaramatuVoice Television, all in Warri Delta State, to protest against the interference of Abubakar Malami, the attorney general and minister of Justice, in the renaming of the Maritime University, sited in Okerenkoko, Gbaramatu kingdom, Delta State.
Malami was alleged to have initiated a memo to the National Assembly urging the parliamentarians to change the name of the Nigerian Maritime University from Okerenkoko to Okerenghigho.
Speaking with newsmen on Tuesday, January 9, in Warri, Abai, the initiator of the protest, stated that apart from the above reason, the Ijaw people would also use the opportunity to protest the continued silence of the presidency on the issue.
“We shall also demand for the resignation of the Minister or his outright sack for his inglorious role in this saga.
Abai added that this controversial memo as authored by the AGF demanding for the renaming of the Nigerian Maritime University from Okerenkoko to Okerenghigho is capable of disrupting the fragile peace that is currently been enjoyed by the people of the region.
He, therefore, stated that the protest to the National Assembly will be a peaceful one, but quickly warned the nation’s security agencies not to do anything that will disrupt the peaceful procession.
The initiator further revealed that the protesters will converge in Warri before departing for the National Assembly complex where they hope to deliver their protest letter.
It could be recalled that the Attorney General of the Federation, Barrister Malami recently sent a memo to the National Assembly, advising the lawmakers to change the name of the Nigerian Maritime University host community from Okerenkoko to Okerenghigho.
