A massive Christmas tree has been erected in front the Reichstag building in Central Berlin, which houses the German Parliament.

The 24-metre spruce tree was installed on Tuesday after being cut down the previous day in a valley near the town of Altenau in the Harz region of Lower Saxony.

The Harz region of central Germany is famous for its fairy-tale landscapes and lush forests.

The tree, which cost 3,960 dollars, was brought into the capital city during the night.

The Lower Saxony State Forestry has sourced the large tree that adorns the green space in front of the German Bundestag from the forests of the Harz for several Christmases.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is due to receive her Christmas tree on Wednesday to be erected outside the chancellery, known as the Washing Machine because of its white boxy shape and large round window.

Hers comes from Berlin’s neighbouring state of Brandenburg and is a more modest 11 metres tall.

Berlin’s landmark sites like the Brandenburg Gate are expected to install their Christmas trees in the coming days. (Dpa/NAN)
