DONALD J. Trump has been inaugurated as the 45th president of United States on Friday, January 20, ushering a new political era in the country. President Trump said his government would battle against Islamic extremism as one of his foreign policy, vowing to work with allies to destroy the jihadist threat.

“We will reinforce old alliances and form new ones and unite the civilised world against radical Islamic terrorism, which we will eradicate completely from the face of the earth. This American carnage stops right here and stops right now. We, assembled here today, are issuing a new decree to be heard in every city, and in every foreign capital and in every hall of power.

“From this day forward, a new vision will govern our land, from this day forward it’s going to be only ‘America first! America first! A new national pride will stir out souls, lift our sights and heal our divisions,” Trump said, saying that whether people are black or white they still bleed the same red blood of patriots. “You will never be ignored again,” he said.

Trump told a crowd of hundreds of thousands massed on the National Mall that the citizens of America were now joined in a great national effort to rebuild the country and restore its promise for all of the people.

“Together we will determine the course of America, and the world, for many, many years to come. From this day forward, it’s going to be only America first,” he said.

Trump’s inauguration caps the improbable rise to power of the Manhattan real estate mogul, who had never before held elected office, served in the government or the armed forces. A crowd of hundreds of thousands looked on, including outgone president Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, the Democrat candidate he defeated in the election, thereby denying her of becoming United State’s first female president.

Trump’s supporters, who sent him to Washington to rip up political norms and thwart the establishment, were thrilled as he assumed power on Friday, January 20.

The crowds started streaming towards the National Mall as dawn broke, with many people wearing Trump’s distinctive red “Make America Great Again” baseball caps.

But millions of Americans were also anxious, owing to the abrasive tone of Trump’s campaign and fears over the consequences of his strongman leadership style.

Trump has vowed to tear up the US trade deals that he says disadvantage US workers, confront a rising China and improve estranged relations with Russia, despite allegations that Moscow interfered in the election.

He has set high expectations for his presidency by promising to return jobs to US shores and reviving the manufacturing industry.

The new president typically used the inaugural address to issue a call for national unity and ease the wounds of divisive elections. He reminded Americans of the values and the history that binds them and of the nation’s historic mission, saying America will not impose its way of life on other countries but will live as a shining example for others.
