THE Saudi-led coalition in the Yemen war on Tuesday intercepted a drone launched by Houthi militia toward the kingdom, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

The spokesperson of the coalition, Turki Al-Maliki, said that the drone was shot down after it was launched from Amran area in Yemen toward Saudi Arabia.

He explained that all attempts by the Iranian-backed Houthi militia to launch drones were doomed to fail.

Maliki added that the coalition takes all operational procedures and best practices of rules of engagement to deal with the drones to protect civilians.

NAN reports that on Monday, airstrikes by the Saudi-led coalition fighting Houthi rebels in Yemen hit a university used as a detention center in a southwestern province on Sunday, killing at least 60 people, officials and the rebels’ health ministry said.

A spokesman for the International Committee of the Red Cross said the death toll could be more than 100.

The attack was the deadliest so far this year by the coalition, which has faced international criticism for airstrikes that have killed civilians and hit non-military targets.

Yemen officials said the airstrikes had targeted the university in Dhamar that is one of dozens of detention centers run by the Houthis in areas under their control. Dhamar is around 60 miles south of the capital, Sana. (Xinhua/NAN)
