A Non-Governmental Organisation, Mmaigbo Empowerment Foundation has empowered scores of qualified youths who enrolled for its skill acquisition trainings.

The 2023 empowerment and skills exhibition which was the second being organised by the foundation,  held on Wednesday in Awka.

Beneficiaries of the Programme drawn from the five igbo speaking states of Anambra, Imo, Abia, Enugu, and Ebonyi were trained on various entrepreneurial skills.

Mr Uzo Ekemezie, Founder of Mmaigbo Empowerment Foundation said he was inspired to establish the body being a beneficiary of free skills training.

He said some of the beneficiaries were  trained in poultry and crop farming, fashion designing, clothes making, baking/confectionary, soap making and web designing and hosting.

Others acquired  computer programming/graphic works, printing press, film editing, cinematography, photography, shoes making, makeup, hair barbing and hairstyling among others.

Ekemezie said the foundation was concerned with the promotion and rejuvenation of the cultural heritage, values, dignity and identities and values of the Igbo people.

According to him, Igbo people by nature are very industrious and enterprising, noting with regrets that in recent years, some youths now participate in strange lifestyles.

“Some youths now get involved in crimes such as armed robbery, cyber/internet fraud popularly called ‘yahoo-yahoo’, money ritual, kidnapping and prostitution,” he said.

He said that involvement of the youths in these anti-social conduct was adversely affecting the society.

“We decided to establish this foundation as a a way of re-orienting the youths through skills, because when one is meaningfully engaged, he/she will see crime as  less attractive.

Ekemezie who said that the foundation partnered with some individuals for the empowerment, added that the group remained  open to work with more groups.

Ms Diana Ndigwe, a guest, told journalists that massive training of Nigeria youths in skills was a solution toward addressing the high unemployment and crime wave in the country.

“I am here because I share the vision with Ekemezie that acquisition of skills by our youths is imperative to checking crime and unemployment,”  Ndigwe said.

Miss Linda Onu, a beneficiary of the Empowerment from Umunze, Orumba South Area, trained on hair dressing thanked the foundation for the humanitarian spirit to alleviate ordinary people from poverty.

“It was through the radio that I heard about the Mmaigbo Empowerment Foundation programme and enrolled, today I thank God that I am among the lucky ones that are been empowered,” she said.(NAN)
