AN NGO, Rockians Medical Foundation (RMF) has carried out oral hygiene exercise and COVID-19 test for Mpape community, a suburb of the Bwari Area Council, FCT.

Speaking during the outreach on Monday, the Founder and Chairman of RMF, Mr Martins Malvin said a lot of people were not taking their oral health seriously, hence the need for the outreach.

“A lot of people feel that since they have brushed their teeth in the morning and night, all is well with them, but it is important they know the steps they need to take daily to protect themselves through proper oral hygiene.”

He said that oral health could determine ones general health, and it was important for people to have the knowledge of how to protect themselves from all the preventable diseases.

“What we are doing generally is to try to provide them all the tools necessary to make it easier for them, most of the time, it is because they cannot afford all these tools to take care of themselves.

“It is not that some of them don’t have the knowledge; the last time we did malaria medical outreach here too, a lot of people knew about it but they didn’t have enough fund to take a step for prevention.

“Some of them cannot buy mosquito net, they don’t have money to buy repellant and this is why it is important we try much as possible to reachout to them, especially to those who cannot afford it.

“On oral hygiene, we have a target to reachout to 300 kids, we also have a target of doing screening and polishing for up to 200 adults.

“We have more than 100 mosquito nets to distributed here today free of charge to the first 100 people that will be here today,” he stressed.

According to Malvin, the plan of the foundation is to provide education on health maintenance culture and common diseases for one million Nigerians.

He added that it was in the plan of the association to reachout to 200 communities and villages in Abuja by providing them clean running water between now and 2024.

He said that the medical outreach was going to be a continuous programme.

On COVID-19, Malvin said that a lot of people thought government was just using the virus to get money from international organisations, because many did not believe in the disease.

He said that the organisations was determined to vaccinate as many people as possible, adding that a lot of people lacked access to basic healthcare.

Malvin said RMF was founded because of the rising problem in relations to common diseases in Nigeria, and was ready to help in that direction.

“We found out that a lot of people lack easy access to basic healthcare and we decided to help in our own little way, and this is one of the ways that we try to help.

“We organise outreaches closer to the people to help them prevent common diseases. This is what we are doing but we are tying this very outreach to COVID-19 to educate them the more.

“A large number of people believe that COVID-19 is just a government ploy to get fund from international organisations and government, but the fact remains that COVID-19 is an existing virus and people have to have the knowledge.

“t is important they have the knowledge to protect themselves and their families, this is why we organised the medical outreach,” he said. (NAN)
