A two – day sensitisation workshop on the Freedom of Information, FOI, Act, has been declared open in Awka, by Harry Uduh, the Anambra State head of service, HOS.
Declaring open the workshop, Uduh, who was represented by Nwando Obiano, director of Training in his office, said that the state had been ever ready to partner with any donor agency, ready to work with them.
He commended the European Union, EU, and the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption, ROLAC, for organising the workshop.
The HOS commended the participants, urging them to be good ambassadors of the state.
Uduh urged the information officers selected for the programme to make good use of the opportunity provided them; reminding them that only 30 of them were chosen out of a number of them.
“If you prove yourself worthy of a little gift, you will get more. To whom much is given, much is expected,” he said.
Earlier, the state programme coordinator of Rule of Law and Anti-corruption (ROLAC), Mrs Josephine Onah, noted that the group was in Anambra to sensitise information officers on the operation of the FOI Act.
Onah said that the programme was partnering with the state government that provided them the enabling environment to hold the sessions.
She said that the EU was funding the development service of the British Council to implement the Rule of law and Anti-corruption programme.
The state coordinator of ROLAC said that the organisation resolved with the FG to fight corruption and reform the rule of law.
She said that the programme, which was a year old, would be implemented in the four states – Adamawa, Kano, Lagos, Anambra and the Federal Capital Territory.
Onah stressed that Anambra was the only South East state selected after a study by the EU card reader, and they observed that Anambra was a top-performing state.
She enumerated that sensitisation was in line with an aspect under the component 3.3 of their work to promote transparency, accountability and integrity within the system.
“We look at what your system is and we try as much as possible to establish the mechanisms that will enable us to have transparency,’’ Onah said.
The coordinator, however, said that they would conclude the first year of the programme by the end of June and July, they would be talking of the second year.
She commended the state government, urging the participants to listen attentively to key in well into the programme.
