THE Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has cautioned drivers to adopt common sense speed limits in view of heavy and incessant downpour of rain being witnessed across the country recently, thereby causing hazards on most of the roads.
Bisi Kazeem, corps public education officer of the FRSC, gave the warning in a press release, that motorists would now be experiencing blur visibility accompanied with foggy weather during this period.
Kazeem said Boboye Oyeyemi, the corps marshal, had expressed worry at the rate at which people neglect the basic ethics of driving during the rainy season thereby resulting in avoidable crashes, death and fatal injuries in some cases. He warned against disobedience to traffic rules and regulations during the raining period, stressing that special squads of the FRSC had been deployed across the country to monitor compliance and bring violators to book.
He stressed that Oyeyemi enjoined drivers to always operate with functional lighting system, wipers and good tyres that would have effective grips of the ground in cases of sudden usage while making sure that braking systems are in perfect working conditions. He advised that where visibility was totally blurred, drivers should stop completely in a safe place, off the highway and to make sure they see and be seen through their head and rear lights respectively.
He assured members of the public that while the corps would continue to do its best to ensure safety on the nation’s roads, every road user must take it as a civic responsibility to comply with the rules of the road to avoid unnecessary carnage.
The corps marshal further enjoined drivers especially that of articulated vehicles to ensure compliance with minimum safety standards and drive within the regulated speed limits. He called on those that are yet to install the speed limiters in their vehicles to do so without delay to avoid arrest and prosecution while promising to send drivers committing some dangerous offences to engage in psychological and emotional evaluation.
