SUNDAY Ajayi, the sector commander, Federal Road Safety Corp, FRSC, has appealed for divine intervention to enable the FRSC to continue to deliver quality humanitarian services to the nation.

Ajayi was speaking during a Thanksgiving Mass at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, Amawbia, Awka South Local Government Area to mark the 30th anniversary of the corps, which he noted had grown `in leaps and bounds.’

He recalled: “Thirty years ago, intractable road traffic issues led many Nigerians to call for setting up of the corps by Federal Government to establish the FRSC in 1998.’’

Ajayi noted that since that intervention, the result had been what corps was now celebrating.

The commander said they had come to ask for support, not only to sustain the level of cooperation but also to enter new phase of sustainable collaboration.

“For us to jointly be successful in sanitising our roads of bad behaviours, we must jettison the misnomer that road mishaps are ‘accidents’.’’

He, then, defined ‘accidents’ as events or occurrences that could not be prevented, pointing out that some times, “what we refer to as road accidents in Nigeria today are indeed preventable.

“A speeding, fatigued, drunk, distractive driver or an unlicenced person, who indulges in driving cannot be said to be involved in accident, because there is an invitation to disaster already.

“The same situation applies to parents, who refuse to take proper care of their children and allow them to wander into the path of motor vehicles.

“In the same vein, a vehicle owner who fails to maintain his vehicle for maximum performance; and other road users, who also indulge in inappropriate road use, cannot claim to be involved in accidents.

“This is why the FRSC have held on to the saying that ‘accidents’ do not just happen, sometimes they are caused by people,’’ Ajayi said.

Earlier in his homily, Godwin Obiano, a reverend father, said: “this period of Lenten season are battle times with the flesh, world and devil, a moment of trial and a special moment for Christians’’.

He noted that if the devil was able to tempt God, then we must be all on guard.

Obiano said that Christ’s temptation was for “Him to teach us how to experience and overcome our own temptation’’.

According to him, temptation comes when we have a particular goal to achieve and we resist the devil always, he will leave us.
