THE Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Delta Sector Command, in collaboration with other security agencies have launched a special road safety operation for the Yuletide.
Delta Sector Commander, Mr Ocheja Ameh, made this known on Friday in Asaba at a meeting to formally launch the joint-operation with sister security agencies.
He said the task of road safety management and administration, especially during the yuletide, needed the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders.
The sector commander disclosed that a total of 420 FRSC personnel would be deployed in Asaba alone, with over 200 others from zones under the state command joining the operation in their various areas.
He also stated that sister agencies such as the Police, Nigeria Immigration Services, NSCDC and the Delta Traffic Management Agency would also be deploying hundreds of personnel for the operation.
“This assignment of ensuring safety and free flow of traffic on our roads this Christmas season cannot be achieved by the FRSC alone.
“It is very necessary that we collaborate and synergise with relevant stakeholders to achieve this common goal.
“We all are aware that Christmas is here at our doorsteps, and already, we have started to experience heavy traffic on the Asaba-Onitsha highway.
“So, there is an urgent need for us to come together to see how best we can manage the pressure on our roads to make them safe for all,” Ameh said.
The FRSC boss said the joint central road traffic operation would be coordinated by his command with the deployment of personnel to major flashpoints along the expressway.
Ameh said: “First and foremost, we would identify notorious traffic flashpoints along the Asaba/Onitsha highway and deploy personnel to each flashpoint.
“Also, we are going to block major U-turns along the highway, starting from forest junction down to the Onitsha bridge head to make room for free flow of traffic.”
According to him, the personnel for the joint operation deployed to various flashpoints would be supervised by the FRSC for effective coordination.
He said that ambulance services would be available at various points on the Benin/Asaba/Onitsha highway to assist in evacuation in the event of emergencies.
Ameh also said the Red Cross team would be part of the operation, with a deployment of the humanitarian agency stationed at major flashpoints on the expressway.
News Agency of Nigeria reports that the meeting was attended by representatives of the Nigeria Police Force, NSCDC, Nigerian Army and the Bikers Association of Nigeria (BAN).
Others in attendance were representatives of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Special Road Marshals, NURTW and the Delta Road Traffic Management Agency. (NAN)
