THE Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) on Thursday officially admitted 4,529 students for 2023/2024 academic session.

The Vice-Chancellor of FUTA, Prof. Adenike Oladiji, in her speech at the ceremony explained that the fresh students comprise of 3,798 undergraduates and 731 postgraduates.

According to Oladiji, the undergraduate list consist of 2,694 males and 1,104 females.

The vice chancellor said the university had built an enviable image for itself among the Nigerian universities, after being consistently named the best university of technology in Nigeria for more than two decades.

Oladiji said FUTA won N426.5 million in the 2023 Research Grant Cycle of the Tertiary Education Fund’s National Research Fund Initiative, having led the park with 17 grants.

She said that the positive development was not a mere coincidence but a further confirmation of the institution being a research-intensive school.

“Let me sound a serious note of warning to you that FUTA frowns seriously at examination malpractices.

“Involvement in any form of examination malpractices would earn you stiff penalties, suspension or expulsion depending on the seriousness.

”May I quickly warn you in advance that impersonation in examination halls would earn the culprit automatic expulsion. To be forewarned is to be forearmed.

“FUTA also does not take kindly to cultism and other forms of anti-social tendencies. Do not get involved at all.

“Very importantly, I must draw your attention to cyber-crimes because you all belong to the ‘Generation Zoomer (Gen Z)’ who are “Always on” with mobile devices. They are practically as important to you as oxygen.

“The devices have made the world a much better place in many ways but they have also become weapons of destruction through crimes such as cyber-bullying, phishing, hacking, and in particular, plagiarism in the academia,” she said.

Oladiji, who emphasised the importance of research in the standing of any university, implored postgraduate students to take it seriously.

“I want to assure you that the University management is not relenting in ensuring that no time is wasted on your programmes and the infrastructural supports are made available as much as possible,” she said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Oladiji later administered the oath to the new students.(NAN)
