A GROUP known as Peoples Democratic Party Northern Elders, has called on Ali Modu Sheriff, national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party and other members of the party’s National Working Committee to vacate office on May 21. It also called for the postponement of the party’s national convention slated for that date in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The group led by Jerry Gana, former minister of information, said the postponement was necessary in order to reconcile aggrieved members of the party.

The Gana group decried what it called the level of impunity and imposition in the PDP, noting that for the party to return to the vision of its original founders, it must purge itself of these vices. The PDP Northern Elders’ Forum also picked holes in the proposed constitutional amendment, noting that it violated the party’s constitution.

The PDP National Executive Committee is meeting on Wednesday, May 11, to debate the proposed constitutional amendment. Sheriff had proposed various amendments to the party’s constitution, including a clause which forbids members of the Board of Trustees of the party from meeting without the knowledge of the national chairman.

Some members of the Forum who attended the meeting were Senate Ibrahim Mantu, former deputy president of the senate; Waziri Maina, former minister of police affairs, and Ahmed Gulak, former presidential aide.

Some concerned PDP leaders led by Aliyu Babangida, former Niger State governor, had earlier called for the postponement of the convention due to observed flaws in the ongoing congresses across the states.
