GERMAN Defence Minister Boris Pistorius arrived in Singapore on Friday at the start of a trip that will also take in Indonesia and India.

Pistorius is to participate in the Shangri-La Dialogue organised by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) which runs to Sunday.

The dialogue is to focus on China’s growing influence and military might, as well as the consequences resulting from the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

U.S. Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin is to address the conference on Saturday, and Chinese Minister of National Defence Li Shangfu plans to outline China’s new security agenda on Sunday.

The Shangri-La Dialogue at the level of defence ministers is seen as the most significant security forum in the region.

Forty countries have sent representatives.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is also to attend, along with Australia’s defence minister.

On Sunday, Pistorius travels on to Indonesia, followed by India.

The German government has outlined plans for greater engagement in the Indo-Pacific, with the Defence Ministry and the German military supporting a strategy to increase international cooperation in the region. (dpa/NAN)
