A Gynaecologist with the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH), Gwagwalada, FCT, Dr Elizabeth Sanda has advised Nigerians to go for regular cancer screening for early detection and treatment of the disease.

Sanda gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gwagwalada on Tuesday.

According to her, regular screening and early detection would help to reduce the number of deaths arising from cancer, especially among women.

“Cancer is a deadly disease and I have special focus on breast and cervical cancer, popular with the females.

“Early detection and prevention is very necessary so that we can reduce the number of deaths and achieve zero level to cancer in the country.

“If people go for regular screening, there would be early detection; it makes it easy for treatment and cure.

“The general public also need to be sensitised on prostate cancer prevalent among males,” she said.

The gynaecologist explained that people living with cancer could take control of their situation by being active participants in decisions about their care.

She said that increased awareness of signs and symptoms and timely diagnosis had been known to improve survival rate.

She explained that not all cancers show early signs and symptoms, adding that other warning signs could appear late when in advanced stage.

She called on the Federal Government to intensify effort in funding relevant health organisations to assist in the fight against cancer in the country. (NAN)
