SPORTS fans in Gombe on Wednesday commended the Super Eagles for qualification to the round of 16, just as they expressed  concerns over the team’s inability to convert their chances.

The fans gave the commendation in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe while reacting to Nigeria’s win over Syli Nationals of Guinea.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Super Eagles defeated Guinea by a lone goal.

Uchenna Johnson, one of the fans, said he was satisfied with the performance of the Super Eagles, adding that the result which earned the team qualification, remained his reference point in the game.

“I am not concerned about anything but the result. We have qualified and I believe we will be improving as we progress to the next round.

“The team showed character in the second half of the game but a lot need to be done to address the wastefulness in front of goal post,” he said.

Another fan, Haruna Yusuf, stressed the need for Coach Gernot Rohr to fix the attack line, adding that the defence and midfield were solid enough for any opponent.

On his part, Mr Halilu Teli, Chairman, Sports Writers’ Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Gombe, said the team played well, especially in the midfield, adding that more needed to be done at the attack line as the team progressed.

Teli stressed the need for Coach Rohr to give more playing time to Denmark-based Paul Onuachu, whom he described as a striker that could deliver the goals for the team.

He cautioned that the team must improve with their subsequent games if Nigeria was to clinch the trophy.

Another fan, Mohammed Ismail, said though he was satisfied with the performance of the team, there was need for players to improve on their communication strategy while on field of play.
