THE Benue government, on Friday said the 40 years old State Secretariat, built by late Gov. Aper Aku in 1982, would be renovated.

The Commissioner for Works and Housing, Mr Imojime Tiza, disclosed this on Tuesday in Makurdi, when he hosted the state’s Correspondents’ Chapel members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

Tiza said the state secretariat would be fully renovated and furnished, adding that the cost of the project would be announced when the entire paperwork had been completed.

He said the part of the secretariat that was yet to be completed would also be completed.

The commissioner said the administration of Gov. Hyacinth Alia, had resolved to ensure that the secretariat met the desired standard of the late Aku, aimed at providing a conducive working environment for workers.

Tiza also disclosed that efforts were underway for the renovation of the Makurdi Governor’s lodge, and the Commissioners’ Quarters.

He said the commissioners’ quarters was a death trap, adding that given the degree of dilapidation, the ministry had started its renovation through direct labour, in order to save cost.

According to him also, the state government was already constructing 16 township roads within Makurdi, adding that the roads will soon be completed and the state capital will be beautified before the Yuletide.

He said the government was also reviewing contracts of the previous administration to ensure that everything was done correctly, and to know the number of abandoned projects and why they were abandoned.

“We are making frantic efforts to make the town look beautiful before the yuletide. We will try to make our city get back its glory.

“One thing is making roads, another thing is making legal roads that will last without having to face legal issues afterwards,” he said

Tiza further stressed the need for joint efforts by all residents of the state to make Benue work for the betterment of every citizen.

Earlier, the Chairman, Correspondents’ Chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Benue State Council, Emmanuel Antswen, said the chapel was at the ministry to partner with the commissioner in the best interest of the state. (NAN)
