Gov. Fayemi’s wife inaugurates centre for victims of rape, sexual assault

THE wife of the Ekiti governor, Mrs Bisi Fayemi, on Tuesday, inaugurated the Ekiti Sexual Assault Referral Centre for emergency treatments and proper monitoring of victims of rape and sexual offences in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the inauguration of the facility called Moremi Ekiti Sexual Assault Referral Centre, held at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital in Ado-Ekiti.
Mrs Fayemi, who decried the alarming rates at which girls and women were being molested sexually of late, said that the centre would provide succour for the victims.
“The centre will give emergency treatments and care for sexual victims and will also offer legal aid for them.
“The centre will provide counselling and psychosocial support for the victims and all other support they need to get out of the mess in no time,’’ she said.
The wife of the governor urged the public to direct all those who might need such services to the centre for immediate treatment and counselling.
Mrs Fayemi said that the centre would be replicated across the 16 Local Government Areas of the state for prompt response and treatment of women and girls, who were victims of sexual abuse.
She promised that the permanent site of the centre would be ready before September in order for more people to access care.
The Chief Medical Director of the state university teaching hospital, Prof. Kayode Olabanji, assured the governor’s wife that he would deploy the needed medical personnel to the centre.
Also, the Commissioner for Information and Value Orientation, Mr Muyiwa Olumilua, promised to give the necessary awareness to the activities of the centre for the benefit of the people.
