GoOV. Godwin Obaseki of Edo on Friday unveiled first state-owned data centre and digital policy for a sustainable tech-driven economy in the state.
Inaugurating the centre in Benin, Obaseki noted that digital revolution was at the core of Edo’s developmental agenda to advance technology in the state.
The governor stated that the newly introduced digital policy would serve as a guide for driving digital innovation going forward.
He maintained that with a youth-centered population, Edo was uniquely positioned for technological growth, adding that in today’s world, tech literacy was essential for development and progress.
“Global technological advancement is accelerating at a staggering pace, and staying relevant requires strategic foresight.
“Edo has long embraced this mindset, building on its centuries-old tradition of international collaboration.
“This digital evolution reflects the state’s historic role as a knowledge hub. To remain competitive, Edo chose to embrace digital transformation early on, investing in initiatives that empower its youth.
“Programmes like EdoJobs and Edo Innovate Hub have trained over 50,000 young men and women, fostering a robust digital ecosystem across the state,” he said.
Obaseki added that initiatives like EdoBEST, benefiting over 400,000 students, reflected Edo’s commitment to digital education.
He said Edo had deployed digital tools in public schools, ensured data access for teachers, parents, and students, bridging educational gaps.
He disclosed that healthcare was another sector reaping the rewards of digitalization, adding that primary healthcare centres in Edo were connected to electronic records and supported by digital health insurance.
“Edo’s advanced fiber-optic network connects every local government, facilitating digital healthcare consultations with experts worldwide.
“Edo’s new data center acts as a secure hub for government and business data.
“This infrastructure is vital for digital operations, empowering local businesses and the entire South-South region with secure data storage options.
According to him, cyber security is a top priority for Edo’s digital framework, ensuring protection across digital platforms.
He said that the new policy provided a robust foundation for a secure, sustainable digital ecosystem, solidifying Edo as Nigeria’s digital pioneer.
Mr Ifaluyi Isibor, the state Commissioner for Digital Economy, Science, and Technology, praised the Obaseki administration’s visionary efforts in transforming Edo’s economy.
He highlighted Edo’s trailblazing role as Nigeria’s first state to develop a comprehensive digital policy. (NAN)
