GOV. Willie Obiano of Anambra state has commended the State Chapter of Nigerian Medical Association, NMA’s, contributions to the state health sector.

Gov. Obiano made the commendation while declaring open the Annual General Meeting/Scientific Conference of State Chapter of NMA in Awka, which has the theme “Tissues and Organ Donation, Scope, Prospect and Ethical Challenge’’.

He said that plans were on to establish a medical tourism garden in the state and assured them of his continued support in the state.

The idea, he says, is to ensure that Anambra people access medical care within the state rather than going abroad.

According to him, the issue of state tourism is not just establishing but a process and the goal of his administration is to create a medical tourist garden.

“It will help to ensure that those planning to seek medical attention outside the state will do it here.

“We appreciate the efforts of doctors in the state, especially during this pandemic era. May God grant eternal rest to the souls of frontline workers who died in the discharge of their duties,’’ Gov. Obiano said.

The commissioner for health, Vincent Okpala, represented the governor at the occasion.

The State Chapter of the NMA, Jide Onyekwelu, described the meeting as an avenue to brainstorm on new developments in healthcare delivery and dovetail discussions to bear on the health of the people.

Onyekwelu said that the NMA in Anambra remained one of the few state branches that has no secretariat and appealed for assistance from guests and partners in the sector.

According to him, Gov. Obiano has approved a parcel of land for them in 2019; a design of the structure has been done and estimated cost of N500 million for the construction is intimidating.

The Chairman of the occasion, Emma Emelumadu, said that Nigeria was seriously lagging behind on issues of ‘Tissues and Organ Donation, which he said, formed an important part of success in medicine.
