Gov. Uba Sani mourns Mama Dora Akanya

KADUNA State Governor, Uba Sani has received with sadness the death of foremost public servant, Mama Dora Akanya (née Miller) at the age of 90.
This is contained in a statement issued on Wednesday in Kaduna by Sani’s Chief Press Secretary, Muhammad Shehu.
Shehu quoted Sani as describing the deceased as an astute public administrator and teacher.
“She was a Commissioner for Health and Social Welfare in whose honour the ministry’ complex is currently named.
Sani described the late Miller as “one of the earliest icons of female empowerment in Nigeria, who rose to the pinnacle of her career as a public servant, due to her sheer grit, diligence and incorruptibility.”
Miller and her late twin sister, Mrs Mary Jarma were born in Zaria in 1933 and attended the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology, Zaria .
Late Akanya served in several capacities in the civil service such as adult education office
She served in several capacities in the civil service such as adult education officer in the Ministry of Information and Public Enlightenment of the old government of Northern Nigeria and Principal, Government Girls’ Secondary School, Minna in 1967.
She was a commissioner in the the. North-Central State in the same year; a position that made her the first woman to be appointed as a Civil Service Commissioner in Nigeria at the time.
She also served as commissioner for Health and Social Welfare, after which she returned to the Kaduna State Ministry of Education, where she retired in 1980 after 27 years in public service.(NAN)
