TWO prominent Nigerians – Governor Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN, of Ondo State, and Ghali Umar Na’ Abba, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, have died on Wednesday, December 27. Akeredolu, popularly called Aketi, died after a long battle with Leukemia while Na’Abba died in a hospital in Abuja, after a brief illness.
Akeredolu has been in office since February 24, 2017, and has been on medical leave in Germany for treatment. He returned and moved to his house in Ibadan, instead of the Government House in Akure and he was not seen in public ever since. This led to a conundrum over the absentee governor and finally, after a meeting of the governor and his deputy with President Bola Tinubu, he was asked to transmit power to his deputy. On December 13, Akeredolu wrote the State House of Assembly, informing them of his intention to travel abroad for medical treatment, and handed over power to Lucky Aiyedatiwa, his deputy, as the acting governor, as mandated by the constitution.
Akeredolu, 67, was a law graduate from the University of Ife, who rose to become the president of the Nigerian Bar Association before he became governor.
Also, Na’ Abba aged 65 years, obtained a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 1979.
His early education was at Jakara Primary School, Kano where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate in 1969.
Na’abba later attended Rumfa College, Kano for his West African School Certificate and was also at School of Preliminary Studies, Kano, between 1974 and 1976, before gaining admission into Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in October, 1976.
