Governor Uzodimma confirms death of Prof. George Obiozor

GOVERNOR Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has confirmed the passing away of Prof. George Obiozor, President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.

An announcement to this effect has been made by the governor on behalf of the government and people of Imo state.

He said he was sorrowfully announcing “the passage of a great son of Imo State and Nigeria….A renowned academic, an exceptional diplomat and statesman and a tenacious patriot, …(who) passed on recently after a brief illness.”

Gov. Uzodimma said that “the death of this foremost Igbo leader and former Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States and the State of Israel, is a big loss to Imo state, the South East and the entire Nigeria.

“I have no doubt that both Nigeria and the international community will miss his profound intellectual contributions and wise counsel on national and global issues.

“His burial arrangements will be announced in due course by the family.

“May his great and gentle soul rest in peace,” he concluded.

There had been rumours of the death of Professor Obiozor before now, but the announcement by the Imo State Governor has confirmed the speculations to be true.

Realnews learnt that Obiozor died in a hospital in Imo State, where he was treated for a heart related disease as he suffered from low BP.

Before his death, he called close friends to let them know he was dying. He was aged 80.

One of his friends who talked to Realnews under conditions of anonymity said Prof. Obizor did not really recover from the shock he had when unknown gunmen burnt his newly built country home. The house is home to his library where he kept a collection of books he had collected all through his life.

Similarly, Goddy Uwazuruike, former president of Aka Ikenga, who reacted with shock to the news of Obiozor’s death, however, expressed gratitude to God for a life well spent as he learnt of the death of the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide as announced by the government of Imo state.

According to him, Prof George Obiozo has been a high flier all his life. In academia, he was a star .
In political life, he excelled in the appointments he held both during the military and civilian governments.

In retirement from government services, he was elected the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide on Jan 20, 2020.

“In almost 2 years of service, he stood like a rock of Gibraltar, even in the face of health challenges.

“We salute him for his Life of service.

Rest in peace, Great man!!!”.
