GERMAN Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokesman on Friday confirmed that she was to hold talks with young climate activists in Berlin on Thursday, including Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg.
The Friday Representatives of the youth movement ‘Fridays for Future’ spokesman, Steffen Seibert, told Newsmen in Berlin that the movement would hold an “informal exchange” with the German leader on climate issues of national/global importance.
He noted that Merkel supports young people who took to the streets to protest for ambitious action on climate change.
Luisa Neubauer, the 24-year-old face of Fridays for Future’s Germany branch, also plans to attend the proposed meeting.
Thunberg, 17, began a global movement to draw attention to climate change by skipping school on Fridays, staging her first school strike in August 2018.
Following mass school strikes and climate demonstrations in countries across the globe in September 2019, the protest movement has been less visible in recent months due to the coronavirus pandemic.
