Dr. Vings Lomak, the Coordinator of NEWSAN in Plateau, made the commendation in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Jos.

NAN reports that the Gov. Simon Lalong of Plateau had on June 6, 2019, signed the Water Sector bill into law.

The water law provides for public-private partnerships in the development and management of water resources in the state.

According to Lomak, the public presentation held on June 5, 2020, was proof of the political will and a demonstration of commitment toward improving the water sector governance for the people of the state.

The coordinator, who called for the prompt implementation of the law, added that it would improve the revenue generation-base of the state and job creation.

“We wish to commend the government of Plateau for the public presentation of the state gazette water sector law. With this, Plateau has joined the league of states with a functional water sector law in the country.

“We commend the state governor for his sense of responsibility and good governance, which is a proof of political will and demonstration of commitment to the improvement of the water sector governance for the good of the people.

“The law is a veritable tool that guarantees life’s sustenance and growth, serve as a source of revenue for government amidst dwindling economy and as well an employment creation drive,” he said.

The coordinator said the law, which permits the commercialisation of some operation of the water sector, would ensure adequate and sustainable water supply and promote sanitation and hygiene in the state.

“We are particularly impressed that Section 3 (1a) of the law amplifies the citizen’s right to access sustainable safe water and sanitation, which guarantees the fulfillment of the basic needs of the present and future generations.

“It will enable stakeholders in the water sector to explore all possible avenues to ensure adequate and regular supply of water to Plateau residents,” he said.

Lomak said that the full implementation of the law would ensure gender mainstreaming and inclusive participation in the management of water in the state in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The coordinator advised the government to promptly commence the implementation of the law to achieve its intended purpose, adding that the demand for water had assumed increased urgency owing to challenges posed by the advent of coronavirus. (NAN)
