THE Coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Plateau, has called on the Plateau Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) to conduct credible and peaceful local government election in the state.
The group made the call during a visit to the management of the commission on Friday in Jos.
Speaking, Mr Gad Peter, leader of the coalition, commended the state government and the commission for its commitment towards conducting the election.
He said that the visit was to remind the commission of the need to conduct an election that would unite the state.
”We are here because we all promote good governance and democracy in Plateau using our various organisations.
”We have collectively and individually invested in the peace of the state: we don’t want anything that will distort our current peace in the state.
”We are all witnesses to the outcome of the 2008 local government election, we don’t want a repeat of that ugly episode.
”This is why we are appealing to you to ensure that the election is peaceful; it should be one that will unite Plateau people the more,”he said.
Gad, who promised to support the commission toward a credible poll, further called on it to be fair, just and make the election inclusive.
He also called on the commission to create proper awareness about the election.
Responding, Mr Plangji Chishak, Chairman of the commission, represented by the Secretary, Mr Pam Davou, thanked the coalition for the visit.
Cishak told the coalition that the commission had been operating devoid of interference from government.
”Let me assure you that this team is carefully selected by the government on our track records and we will not do anything to tarnish our reputation.
”We will organise an election that will be applauded only Plateau people and even beyond,”he said.
The chairman promised to partner with all relevant stakeholders toward conducting a credible, fair and peaceful election in the state.(NAN)
