THE Education for All in Nigeria (EFAN) and Coalition Against Corruption and Bad Governance (CACOBAG) has urged the Federal Government to review budgetary allocations to education and healthcare upward.
The groups made the call in a statement jointly signed in Lagos on Tuesday by EFAN Founder, Mr Oyewole Dele and CACOBAG Founder, Toyin Raheem.
According to the groups, the budgetary allocation to these sectors should not be reduced.
“No nation can survive without adequate funding of its education sector and as the wise saying goes, health is wealth.
“Coronavirus pandemic is a bitter lesson for governments to give serious attention to the health sector,” they said.
They also noted that budgetary allocation to the Judiciary ought not to have been reduced, saying that democracy could only survive when its judiciary was strengthened and adequately funded.
“Judiciary as an arm of the government is very critical to the development of democracy.
“It is the only arm that sustainability of the two other arms depend. We cannot have optimal performance from the judiciary if it’s being grossly underfunded,” they said.
The groups also suggested that 26 per cent of the country’s annual budget should go to education.
They advocated that serious attention be given to the healthcare ministry.
The groups also urged government not to make renovation of the National Assembly complex a priority at this period.
They suggested that this should be used to beef up the allocations for education and healthcare.
They urged Nigerians to join voices in explaining the need for more funding of the key sectors of education and healthcare. (NAN)
