A renowned Islamic cleric in the South East, Sheikh Ibrahim Iyiorji, was shot dead on Sunday at his residence in Isu, Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, by gunmen suspected to be members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
He died Monday night at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, to where he was taken for medical treatment.
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) while condoling with the Ebonyi State Muslims charged the authorities to arrest and prosecute the killers.
MURIC, in a statement signed by the chairman of the Abuja branch, Salahudeen Ustaz Yunus, urged the government to unravel the circumstances surrounding the attack.
“May Allah enable the government to do the needful in getting to the root of the circumstances surrounding his attack by the dare devils.
“May Allah make it easy for each and every one of us to strive hard in pleasing Allah before our destined period of death,” the statement read in part.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Ebonyi, SP Chris Anyanwu, said that command was not aware of such incident. “I have not heard or informed that such incident happened in Onicha Local Government Area, so that is just the situation,” he simply said.
