THE Anambra State commissioner for health, Vincent Okpala, has commended the Medical Support Services, MSS, Stakeholders contributions in healthcare delivery in the state.
Medical Support Services comprise Physiotherapists, Medical Laboratory Scientists, Radiographers, Medical Record Officers, Scientific Officers, Dieticians, Dental Therapists and Dental Technologists.
Okpala, who made the commendation while addressing MSS Stakeholders during their maiden meeting at the Jerome Udoji Secretariat Complex, Awka, explained that MSS is a vital field in healthcare and urged them to be good ambassadors of their profession, while discharging their duties.
“I am really impressed with the organisational skills of my director Obiageli Okeke in getting the team together and it is the MSS that actually makes healthcare delivery to work in the state and in Nigeria.
“When things work well the healthcare indices start going up for the ones that need to go up and the ones that need to go down starts going down.
“We are truly excited that this is happening, especially with the regulators that are here participating in this meeting and I thank you for what you are doing to improve healthcare delivery.’’
He reminded them that more work needed to be done, especially in the area of fighting fake and quack in the practice.
“We should handle our profession like those out to manage or equip the place to take care of us if we are to be presented in that system during an emergency.
“For instance, if I get involved in a road traffic accident and I am unconscious, the person carrying me will take me to the nearest hospital; I didn’t do my best to make that place work either by way of facility and manpower development.
“Then, I will become a victim of the soup that I prepared for myself and the same thing is applicable to all of us,’’ he said.
The commissioner assured them that the state government through his ministry would continue to assist them and that he had taken note of their challenges.
The State Director MSS, Obiageli Okeke, said that the meeting of the different facets of the multi professional and important department was to brainstorm, proffer proactive solutions for a way forward.
She explained that the meeting had in attendance representatives of Council, Boards, Public and Private sectors of the different professionals that made up MSS.
“We have come together as one body to deliberate on ways to improve the welfare of officers, enhance professionalism and deliberate on ways to fight quackery in the practice.
“This will immensely promote the health status of the state in particular, Nigeria in general and that is why we need concerned bodies to furnish us with requirements for setting up private outfits viz ethical and statutory provisions.
“Now that the department is set on wheels we implore the administrators of the ministry for encouragement, especially in the area of infrastructure, ethical training and workshops for MSS Officers.
“We also need official vehicles that will enable us to coordinate the activities of the department especially in monitoring and enforcement of professional ethics.’’
According to her, this will go a long way to improve professionalism, increase revenue in the health sector as well as ensure satisfaction of the populace and restore confidence in the officers.
She commended the commissioner, his management for their trust and for appreciating the importance of MSS in the health sector.
