The Kaduna Government says it will begin enrolment of new clients in the State Health Insurance Scheme (SHIS) in the first quarter of 2019.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Paul Dogo, disclosed this during a quarterly interactive forum, tagged “Open Kaduna Health Sector’’, on Friday in Kaduna.
Dogo said progress has been made in ensuring that all residents in the state are covered by the scheme.
“One major impediment to residents accessing healthcare is lack of financial protection as payment of money is made at the point of service, which often leads to catastrophic expenditure with its attendant consequences,’’ he said.
The commissioner said the state government took a number of steps, including passage of the contributory health insurance scheme law, to address the challenge.
“We conducted a readiness assessment which was a qualitative study to generate evidence and identify options to support the design of the scheme,’’ Dogo said.
He assured that work has reached advanced stage on the design of the insurance scheme.
“Sensitisation on the scheme has commenced with the informal sector across the three senatorial zones and would be escalated to the formal sector,’’ he said.
According to him, a director general for the agency had been appointed to manage the scheme. (NAN)
