JOE Akabuike, the Anambra State commissioner for Health, has emphasised the need for couples to have children by choice and not by chance.

Akabuike said this during an ABS Radio programme, `Saving One Million Lives for Results’, aimed at highlighting Maternal and Newborn Child Health.

“Family planning is the practice of controlling the number of children one has and the intervals between their births, particularly by means of contraceptives,’’ he said.

According him, family planning reduces abortion and reinforces people’s rights to determine the number and spacing of their children.

The commissioner noted that condoms which help in the prevention of transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections could be used as family planning device or method.

He, then, appealed to men to be in the decision making of family planning to enhance the condition of their families.

The health commissioner cautioned couples to visit the nearest hospital and health centres to access the services of family planning, and reiterates government commitment to ensuring better healthcare for citizens.

“Government of Anambra State means well for healthcare of Ndi Anambra and will do everything within its reach to enhance it.’’
