A retired Senior Pediatric Nurse, Mrs. Evelyn Agu, has advised parents against female genital mutilation, outlining its grave health implications.
Agu, who was formally with the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) Enugu, gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu.
She said that female genital mutilation was become a serious danger to the health of young girls who were made to go through such barbaric practice; and so should not be encouraged by anyone.
The veteran nurse listed some of the health complications to include severe pain, shock, excessive bleeding, difficulty in passing urine, getting infections; as well difficulties during childbirth.
Agu condemned the practice and the belief that the removal of young girl’s clitoris would curb her craving for sex that often led to sexual immorality.
According to World Health Organisation (WHO), female genital mutilation means all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. (NAN)
