NIGERIANS have been urged to maintain healthy and moderate life style to reduce the burden of stroke in the society.

Peter Katchy, a medical practitioner, who was speaking at this year’s World Stroke Day, said that every October 29, was usually set aside to mark the day.

He observed that unhealthy diet could increase blood pressure and the cholesterol levels in humans.

The medical expert explained that the best way to prevent stroke was through eating healthy diet, exercise regularly, avoid excessive smoking and drinking of alcohol.

Katchy noted these could limit oxygen and nutrients into the brain.

He noted that stroke which was one of the causes of death and disability could occur at any age, irrespective of status.

The doctor explained that although there were therapies to reduce brain injury from acute stroke, but prevention remained the most effective strategy to reduce health consequences and loss often occasioned by stroke.

He urged youths to avoid the abuse of drugs and other intoxicants as well as strive to be actively engaged in productive ventures to avoid risk factors like anger, depression and high blood pressure.

Joseph Okezie, another doctor, enjoined people to cut down on their salt intake and ensure that they had enough sleep every day.
