THE National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Community Development Services (CDS) group in Kano, `Theatre troupe,’ on Friday donated free wheelchairs to five physically challenged persons in the state.

Presenting the wheelchairs, the NYSC Coordinator in Kano, Alhaji Ladan Baba, while commending the group, said the gesture would make a great impact on the lives of the beneficiaries.

Baba added that such efforts should be emulated by other corps members just as the Theatre group emulated from the previous donation by the scheme and other ex-corps members who served in the state.

The NYSC Coordinator said: “I want other corps members to emulate such, not necessary with their monthly allowances, but through mobilising the philanthropists, governments, private and non-governmental organisations to make the donation.’’

He commended the state government for recently donating a large number of wheelchairs to many physically challenged persons across the state.

Baba said that “physically challenged persons are part of the society, and can even be better than the normal people, therefore there is the need to give them more assistance and encouragement so that they should also feel among.’’

Earlier in his welcome address, the President of the CDS group, Mr Solomon Samuel, said the group felt there was the need for them to make meaningful landmark during their one year service in Kano by affecting the lives of the helpless persons.

“Few months ago, as it is the tradition of our CDS group to reachout to the society, we joined the global community to celebrate the Wall Street children day at Karkasara, in Tarauni Local Government Area,” he said.

According to Samuel, part of their experience during the outreach, was the fact that young children are faced with series of challenges which has made a lot of them permanently street children.

He added that specifically, the lives of the handicapped children is bedevilled by lack of adequate access to proper rehabilitation as they tend to lose opportunities of going to schools.

Some of the beneficiaries who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Ali Haruna and Ummu-Salma Salisu, commended the corps members for the assistance.

Haruna called on wealthy individuals in the state to come to their aid as they need more support and encouragement to enable them feel special in the society. (NAN)
