THE Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) medical team has recorded four major health incidences in the ongoing pension verification of Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) in Enugu.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that PTAD commenced a hitch-free biometric verification of retired civil servants who served in federal agencies, corporations and institutions, in two centres in Enugu metropolis on Monday, Aug. 26.

The exercise, which was originally scheduled to end on Sept. 4 has been extended for three more days to end on Sept. 7 to allow for more time to attend to the retired senior citizens.

The FRSC Sector Commander in Enugu State, Mr Ogbonnaya Kalu, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Friday.

Kalu said that the verification had been relatively medical challenge-free since the Federal Government had eliminated the stress retired senior citizens go through in the exercise.

He said that the command had stationed a well-equipped ambulance and a medical team in each of the centres to see that issues of medical challenge were attended to with dispatch.

“At the centre in lngrace Hall, we recorded two incidences of collapsing of senior citizens and we quickly revived them in the FRSC ambulances and later took them in the same ambulance to a private hospital where they fully recovered within two days.

“Also, in Good Shepherd Hall, we revived one elderly woman that fainted and later her grown up children took her away from our ambulance.

“While another was attended to when he was vomiting and taken to the ambulance and after a while he was fully revived and continued with the exercise.

“Apart from these critical medical rescues, the FRSC medical teams at the two centres carried out extensive blood pressure check as well as gave drugs to the retirees and PTAD staff that complained of headache, fever and malaria,” he said.

The sector commander noted that the FRSC medical support to the verification had been commendable and humanitarian in nature, adding that “FRSC ambulance and our medical team has continued to be on alert at their posts at the centres”.

NAN learnt from a PTAD staff, who spoke on condition of anonymity that each of the centres verified a minimum of 400 retirees each day.

He added that the retirees were verified in air conditioned halls and served lunch each day.

NAN also learnt that the ongoing nationwide exercise is to enable PTAD to have a comprehensive, accurate and reliable database for pensioners under the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS).

The database will also be used to address some irregularities in the system, including ghost worker syndrome, duplicate payments, over and under payments, among other needs.

According to the source, 270 agencies, including tertiary and health institutions, and the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria, are expected to be covered by the exercise.

Other agencies include: Nigeria Railway Corporation, Nigeria Postal Service, Aluminum Smelter Company of Nigeria, Nigeria Aviation Handling Company, Nigerian National Shipping Line and Assurance Bank among others. (NAN)
