LEO Nwuba, Transition Committee chairman‚ Awka South Local Government Area, LGA,  has called on the people to take proper care of health equipment or facility within their areas.

The facilities and equipment exist to improve their health status.

“Let us take proper care of any health equipment or facilities we have for the benefit of all of us,” Nwuba stressed.

Nwuba made the call at the council secretariat, Awka during the healthy living sensitisation tour of the area by the Anambra State team in collaboration with UNICEF.

He noted that Governor Willie Obiano provided ambulances, specially designed to get to the grassroots in order to serve the public.

“In case of any emergency, the nearest ambulance is expected to get there and drop off casualties to the nearest medical centres,” he said.

The local government, LG, boss commended the team for educating his people on healthy hygiene practices that would improve their life styles.

He assured that Awka South would always support activities of UNICEF, urging the people to effect all they have learnt in their day to day activities to improve their health.

The team, led by Chineze George-Ileka was made up of officials from the ministry of information and public enlightenment, ministry of health, civil society organisations, CSOs, and National Orientation Agency, NOA.

The team educated the people on healthcare services and proper hygiene habits for sustainable healthy life style.

George-Ileka, who explored various hygiene practices, noted that the programme was necessitated by the UNICEF survey in 2013 that rated Anambra the third unhealthy state within the nation at the time.

She added that in 2014, UNICEF intervened to fast-track healthy life style in the state with Anaocha LGA as the pilot study because it was found the unhealthiest area within the state then.

“Anaocha recorded success after the programme and the success story made UNICEF to extend the sensitisation and training to 10 other LGAs that turned out a success,” George-Ileka said.

The sensitisation tour of the remaining 11 LGAs she said, started since Aug, 6.

No fewer than 10 volunteer health workers from each community within the LGAs would soon be trained to retrain their people in order to achieve the expected positive results.

A former Secretary, Anambra State Association of Town Unions, Mr Emeka Aneto enjoined the people to always take proper care of the food they eat, their habits and environment as the three factors determine their health.

Aneto is also a member of Civil Society Organisation.

Scholastica Okoli, Anambra State health educator, urged the people especially, mothers to always patronise the primary healthcare facilities within their reach to eradicate maternal and child mortality and morbidity in the state.

The areas sensitised include Anambra East, Dunukofia, Aguata, Idemili North, Onitsha South, Nnewi North, Awka North, Njikoka, Onitsha North, Awka South and Orumba South.
