A new executive has been inaugurated to pilot the affairs of the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Committee, WASHCOM, federation in Idemili Council Area of the State.

The inauguration ceremony was performed by Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency, RUWASSA, in collaboration with United Nations International Children Emergency Fund, UNICEF, during the establishment of WASHCOMM Federation Capacity Building Workshop at Ojoto.

Members of the new executive include, Uzochukwu Ejigbalu as chairman, Ejiofor Ezeanya, secretary,  Cecilia Nworah, treasurer, Chidiebere Ibekwute, financial secretary and Kenneth Ejikeme, public relations officer.

Administering the oath of office on members, community mobilisation officer, RUWASSA, Chinwoke Okpaladinobi, urged them to discharge their duties conscientiously in the interest of the body.

She described the association as veritable tool needed to drive health information to the grassroots in partnership with the state and the Local Governments.

Okpaladinobi, then, enjoined them to bring their wealth of experience to bear in carrying out their duties, exchange their skills, knowledge and challenges.

“WASHCOM federation is a central body that unifies activities and ensures accountability of the association in different communities that make up Idemili South.

“We have a committee that supervises all WASH facilities in various communities and enlighten the people on sanitation and hygiene practices but they will come under one umbrella known as WASHCOM Federation,’’ she said.

On behalf of the new executive, chairman, Uzochukwu Ejigbalu commended UNICEF, RUWASSA and members from different communities for considering them worthy to oversee the affairs of the Committee.

He affirmed the readiness of the committee to do everything within their ability to promote sanitation, hygiene and other health–related issues including stopping of open defecation in the area.

“We shall ensure security and maintenance of WASH facilities and as well strive to make communities in Idemili south to become Open Defecation-Free.

“All buildings, markets must have toilet facilities from henceforth.’’
