THE Nigerian Golden Eaglets, winners of the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile, received a rousing welcome on Wednesday, November 11, on their arrival to the country.
On hand to give heroic welcome to the team were thousands of fans, government officials and a cultural troupe to entertain them for being worthy ambassadors.
The team arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja aboard an Emirates Airline flight from Dubai, after it had stayed the night in Dubai on Tuesday after flying from Santiago the previous day.
The whole of the airport zone was rowdy as excited fans struggled to get closer to the players the moment their arrival was announced.
The coach Emmanuel Amuneke-led players were received at the airport by Alhassan Yakmut, director-general of the federal ministry of Youth and Sports; Seyi Akinwunmi, first vice-president, Nigeria Football Federation; Shehu Dikko, second vice-president, NFF, and some other directors of the federal ministry of Youth and Sports.
Yakmut who spoke to the team said: “The entire nation is proud of you. You have done a great thing to bring honour to this country, and President Muhammadu Buhari is very delighted. I also wish to convey to you the joy of the new Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports.”
Kelechi Nwakali, team captain, held the trophy aloft for photographs with the fans and officials, before they were driven round some areas of the Federal Capital Territory in a motorcade.
The players were later taken to the Transcorp Hilton Hotel.
