THE Anambra State branch of the Civil Liberties Organization, CLO, has made a passionate appeal to the federal government to harken to cries of students, parents and Nigerians over the outrageous increase in school fees in the face of economic hardship due to fuel subsidy removal, depreciation of the currency and hyperinflation.

The group in a statement recalled that the federal government has insisted that tuition fees remain free and that there is no increase in school fees.

It added that parents, guardians and Nigerians found out through the newsletters from the schools that the fees had been increased from N39000 to N87000 excluding PTA fee of N15000.

According to the statement endorsed by Vincent Ezekwueme, Chairman and Chidi Mbah Secretary respectively, the group urged the federal government to reverse the decision and avert the danger of having more school dropouts as many parents cannot afford to pay such huge amount of money.

They added that the government should subsidize education and make it the right of every citizen to Senior Secondary School.

“It is correct to say that only through education and skills acquisition, we can fight ignorance, poverty, youth restiveness, terrorism and other vices in the society.

“It is noteworthy that education is the best and greatest pathway to greatness and invaluable contributor to national growth and development.

“We earnestly appeal to President Tinubu, Ministry of Education and National Assembly to listen to the plight, problems, predicament and sufferings of the citizens as increase in school fees will exacerbate the sufferings, pains, agony and hardships of the citizens.

“We equally commends Hon Afam Ogene of Ogbaru Federal Constituency for moving a motion for the reversal of increase in school fees and Members of House of Representatives for unanimously endorsing the motion calling for the reversal of the increase in school fees,” the group said.
