GOV. Willie Obiano of Anambra has emphasised his resolve to bequeath legacies that will restore the pride of Ndi Anambra and reposition the state for greatness in the near future.
“History will be kind to him for this stewardship and records of stellar achievements.’’
Gov. Obiano said this during the launch of the book: “Governor Willie Obiano, 7 Years of Delivering Good Governance in Anambra State 2014-2021’’ on April 21, in Awka.
In his address at the event, Gov. Obiano declared that his administration would end strong and bequeath lasting Legacies to Ndi Anambra.
He noted that among numerous projects executed by his administration, “the Anambra State’s International Cargo/Passenger Airport stands out as a project he is particularly proud of.
“In less than two years, we succeeded in building a world-class airport with top notch facilities -the only one with Satellite Landing System in sub-Saharan Africa.
“In the past seven years we have also delivered projects that will reposition Anambra for a greater future,’’ he said.
Gov. Obiano listed some other achievements of his administration as the construction of 17 bridges, 215 roads – 77 in the central senatorial district, 73 in the north and 65 in the south senatorial districts.
The governor observed that the administration undertook many projects, including the novel N2O million Community Choose Your Project Initiative, massive revolution and commercialisation of agriculture, huge investments in education and health.
Others are infrastructural development, job creation and youth empowerment.
Commenting on the challenges of his administration, Gov. Obiano observed that his administration remained focused on delivering good governance in spite of dwindling resources and the harsh realities of experiencing two economic recessions.
“Anambra State was not affected by the recessions because of effective and prudent management of resources.
“In fact it was during the first recession that the administration initiated the first phase of the N20 million community choose your project programme.
According to Gov. Obiano, the initiative is a master stroke that ignited velocity of money in the state’s economy and ensured that the state escaped the recession.
It is also worthy of note that the airport project was started right in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic induced recession, but the Obiano administration remained resolute and continued the project without borrowing a dime.
“All the time, I was paying salaries and meeting other obligations of the government,’’ he said.
On security, the governor assured Ndi Anambra that his administration would work closely with security agencies to ensure that recent upsurge in crime and attacks on security formations would be arrested promptly, and safety and security of life and property restored in the state.
“I am delighted to announce that all nine gunmen, who carried out the attack in Isuofia, have been arrested.
“We will ensure that criminals are flushed out from the state. We will invade their hideouts. A special team of the Police, Army, Navy, DSS and the civil defence are already on this task,’’ he said.
Gov. Obiano commended the editors of the book and the contributors.
He also said that the book captured the pillars and enablers of his administration succinctly and encapsulated most of his achievements in the past seven years.
The governor acknowledged the contributions of his team to the success of his administration, noting that they made him proud.
Gov. Obiano, then prayed to God that his successor would do even better and greater things for Ndi Anambra.
The book was edited by Uche Nworah, and Emeka Arinze.
The contributors include Victor Ike Oye, Willie Nwokoye, C Don Adinuba, James Eze, Emeka Ozumba, Chuka Nnabuife, Duro Onabule, Ikenna Aniagboso, Ejike Anyaduba and Ifeanyi Afuba.
Others are Dan Scott Ofoneme, Ejike Abana, Maxim Uzoatu and Chris Egbuna.
The book was reviewed by Prof. Frank-Collins Nnamdi Okafor of the Department of Political Science, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
